9 Spray a coat of polyurethane finish on the entire piece and let it dry. Apply a second coat and let it dry.
10 When the finish is completely dry, replace the hardware.
VARIATION: If you want paint rather than stain to show in the distressed areas, paint the entire piece and let it dry. Next, apply furniture wax to selected areas and then add the two paint colors and let them dry. Sand away the paint over the waxed areas, being careful to sand only down to the first paint color.
